Post #9 – “Following the Master”

Matt. 12:1-8 – God gave the sabbath as a compassionate rest to His people. It was intended for remembering and retelling the great acts of God in Israelite history to the next generation. But it was also given to help man rest from his labors and not overwork. God even wanted the land to “rest” or “sabbath” every seven years. Disciples need rest and “sabbathing” to restore their souls, rejuvenate their bodies, and recalibrate their goals.

Matt. 12:33-37 – As a disciple, you will sometimes meet teachers that give you pause, and you begin to wonder whether their heart is pure and their teachings are true. Every false teacher will be known sooner or later. If they are evil within, the words that come out of them will not match their character. Beware of them. Remember that Jesus spoke of these false teachers or false prophets in Matt. 7:15, saying they will come to you in sheep’s clothing but are inwardly vicious wolves.

Matt. 12:38-42 – Just like the Pharisees who were always seeking for a sign, so you will sometimes meet people for whom no amount of proof will be enough. Jesus states here that these “sign-seekers” should consider the resurrection of Himself from the dead. If, after giving “sign-seekers” the evidence for Christ’s resurrection and they are still not convinced, move on. This is the proof that Jesus offers us. There is no greater proof.

Matt. 12:46-50 – The work of discipling others creates bonded relationships that are every bit the stuff of family. Do not underestimate the power of these relationships. They will be of great encouragement to you as you do the work of discipling, often greater than your own family will provide for you.
