Matt. 6:1 – We must become salt and light, but we cannot act in such a way that we bring the spotlight or the praise to us. If praise comes our way, we must be humble and deflect the glory to God. Why? Because we have achieved nothing on our own. All things that we have are from our Father. Becoming salt and light to the world is fundamental to disciple-making.
Matt. 6:15 – If we truly want to be like God, like the Master Teacher, we must forgive others. We cannot expect forgiveness if we do not grant forgiveness. In my mind, nothing makes us more like Jesus than when we forgive.
Matt. 6:19-21 – Accumulating earthly wealth is a never-ending “storing up” that has no place in a disciple’s mindset. (Isn’t earthly wealth what captivated the rich, young ruler?) Vs. 20 helps us understand that if I make other disciples, this work is a stored treasure in heaven that cannot be touched by earthly ruin. A good measure of a disciple’s work is to answer the question, “How many people have I caused/encouraged to follow Christ?” Disciple-makers are difference-makers.
Matt. 6:22-23 – The “eye” of man (or heart/mind of man) is what will influence us for good or evil. As a disciple, I must make sure my “eye” is “clear” (single, sound, healthy, sincere). My “eye” or heart is properly centered through prayer and the Word. Every disciple must be grounded in prayer and the Word – there is no other way!
Matt. 6:24 – When I became a disciple, I chose Jesus as my master. The “hate” here means love less or to not prefer. I must stay loyal to my master teacher. Remember, the world can be a very effective teacher as well, but I must fight against the duality of devotion.
Matt. 6:25-34 – Worry will cripple me as a disciple, and make me yearn for worldly things. When I worry, I don’t trust my master teacher. Jesus sent the 70 out WITHOUT money; yet, they were fully cared for and returned rejoicing! Worry robs me of the joy of serving in the Kingdom.
Matt. 6:33 – “Seek first . . .” What is first (elevated above all others and everything) in my life? Is it the Kingdom? I serve a great King . . . King Jesus. He deserves nothing less than first place in my life! And again, this is a matter of trust. God WILL provide. I have to continually remind myself of how God has cared for me. When have I ever gone hungry, gone homeless, gone clothes-less?!
